Indus Towers Deploys 50,000 Solar Powered Sites Across India
Indus Towers Limited has deployed 50,000 solar-powered telecom sites in India and plans to reach 100,000 sites by fiscal year 2029 to reduce energy costs.
Indus Towers Limited has deployed 50,000 solar-powered telecom sites across India, covering approximately 18.5% of its 270,480-tower network. The company aims to double this capacity to 100,000 sites by fiscal year 2029 to lower energy costs, decrease reliance on diesel, and reduce annual carbon emissions by an estimated 420,000 tonnes.
To optimize energy consumption, the company integrated solar installations with smart meters, digital energy management systems, and lithium-ion batteries. These technical upgrades have resulted in a cost saving of 8% to 10% per kilowatt. Deployments are concentrated in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan, while some sites in Jammu and Kashmir now operate exclusively on battery storage and solar power.
Beyond the Indian market, the company is leveraging these energy-management capabilities to support expansion into Zambia and Uganda, where high diesel costs and electricity constraints present significant operational challenges. The initiative is driven by a combination of commercial viability and the need to maintain network availability during grid outages.
