British Columbia Adopts Permanent Year-Round Daylight Time

The Government of British Columbia has eliminated twice-yearly clock adjustments by adopting a permanent year-round daylight time zone.

The Government of British Columbia has officially adopted permanent year-round daylight time, ending the practice of twice-yearly clock adjustments. Following a final forward shift on March 8, the province did not fall back on November 1, instead remaining on a permanent time zone set seven hours behind co-ordinated universal time (UTC-7).

While the majority of the province now follows this new Pacific time (B.C.), regional variations remain. Northeastern areas that previously followed Mountain Standard Time have aligned with the rest of the province, while southeastern areas following Mountain Daylight Time remain aligned with Alberta.

Major technology companies have released updates to support the transition. Apple updated macOS and iOS to include a B.C.-specific time zone, and Microsoft provided a Pacific time (B.C.) setting for its calendar services. Google implemented changes to Google Calendar where events created on or after July 20 follow the new time zone; events created before that date may appear an hour later and are flagged with a warning badge. Users are advised to verify device settings and confirm appointment times with organizers in other time zones.
