English Drivers Pay 40% More Due to Parking App Fees
Local councils in England are facing criticism as app-only parking systems add convenience fees that increase costs by up to 40% over advertised tariffs.
Drivers in England are paying significantly more for parking as local councils replace physical pay-and-display machines with app-only payment systems. These platforms often impose convenience or service fees between 10p and 30p that are not included in the tariffs advertised on car park signage.
In Chester, a 20p convenience fee has resulted in a 40% price increase, while a 30p charge in Harrogate has raised costs by 38%. The Department for Transport stated that drivers should be able to see clear charges before they pay, and the AA argued that advertised prices should represent the final cost.
App providers have disputed claims of opacity. RingGo and PayByPhone maintain that their pricing is transparent and that disclosing fees on physical signage is the responsibility of the councils. JustPark asserts that no additional costs are added at the payment stage. Conversely, the Local Government Association has shifted the responsibility for fee clarity onto the app providers.
