Mnangagwa Reshuffles Zanu PF Amid Succession Tensions with Chiwenga
President Emmerson Mnangagwa reshuffled the Zanu PF ruling party as Vice President Constantino Chiwenga warned against repeating the mistakes that led to Robert Mugabe's ouster.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa reshuffled the Zanu PF ruling party on October 15, 2026, appointing businessman Kuda Tagwirei as Secretary for Economic Affairs and Investment Promotion. Tagwirei, who was recently sworn in as Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion, has seen a rapid political ascent that has fueled speculation regarding future leadership. Other appointments included Justice Mayor Wadyajena to the Central Committee and the move of Obert Mpofu to the Council of Elders.
The reshuffle occurs amid intensifying internal conflict over the party's succession timetable as Mnangagwa's second term ends in 2028. Tensions have risen following a 2021 constitutional change that removed the running-mate provision and recent efforts by some party members to extend the president's tenure to 2030.
During the party's 23rd National People’s Conference in Chinhoyi, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga cautioned the party against repeating the errors that led to the 2017 ouster of Robert Mugabe. Chiwenga called for a "brutal and honest self-appraisal," questioning whether party resolutions authentically capture the voices of the grassroots or are driven by a small elite. Mnangagwa responded by emphasizing party stability and unity, stating that leadership should focus on service rather than self-glorification.
