US Dollar Weakens as Treasury Yields Retreat
The US Dollar declined Tuesday as Treasury yields fell amid reports of a Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire and a selloff in AI stocks.
The US Dollar weakened on Tuesday following a retreat in US Treasury yields, with the 10-year yield dropping below 5.19% from a recent peak of 5.365%. This shift followed reports of a US-brokered energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, which lowered oil prices, and a significant selloff in AI and semiconductor stocks, including a 5.46% plunge in South Korea's KOSPI.
Despite the short-term rally, the International Monetary Fund warned in its Global Financial Stability Report that persistent inflation and elevated government debt could lead to a disorderly increase in sovereign bond yields. The organization highlighted a risk of collective unwind by hedge funds, whose share of US Treasury holdings grew from 4% in 2022 to 9% in 2025.
Market participants are now focusing on the upcoming US Consumer Price Index report to determine if the Treasury recovery will continue or if inflation data will force the Federal Reserve to implement further tightening.
