China Coast Guard Obstructs Philippine Medical Evacuation at Ayungin Shoal

The Philippine Coast Guard accused China of using water cannons to delay a medical evacuation of a sick serviceman for 10 hours on October 8.

The Philippine Coast Guard reported that the China Coast Guard obstructed a medical evacuation of a sick Navy serviceman from the BRP Sierra Madre at Ayungin Shoal on October 8, 2026. Philippine officials allege that Chinese vessels used water cannons and aggressive maneuvers to delay the operation for nearly 10 hours, forcing the BRP Cabra to change its rendezvous point. The patient was eventually transferred via a small boat and reached the BRP Cabra by 5 p.m.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China rejected these claims, asserting that a Philippine vessel entered the adjacent waters of Ren'ai Jiao without permission. Chinese officials stated that the China Coast Guard took legitimate measures and eventually facilitated the evacuation on humanitarian grounds. Beijing characterized the Philippine reports as publicity stunts and attempts to distort facts.

Philippine Coast Guard Commandant Ronnie Gil Gavan condemned the interference, stating that saving injured persons at sea is a basic obligation. Meanwhile, Chinese spokesperson Mao Ning accused Manila of stirring up trouble and grabbing attention. The incident occurred amid ongoing disputes over the grounded Philippine warship at the shoal, which China claims as part of its Nansha Qundao territory.
