Amit Shah Reviews West Bengal Border Security and Law Order
Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Siliguri and Kolkata to review border surveillance, inaugurate BSF projects, and oversee the implementation of new criminal laws.
Amit Shah conducted a multi-day visit to West Bengal from July 17 to 19, 2026, focusing on national security and the transition to new legal frameworks. On July 18, the Union Home Minister visited the Jumagachh Border Out Post of the Border Security Force's 18th Battalion in Siliguri to review security along the border with Bangladesh. During this visit, he inspected an Intruder Warning System and a Radio-based Fence Intrusion Detection System, asserting that the Siliguri Corridor is transitioning from a site of infiltration into a secure border.
In Siliguri, Shah inaugurated several BSF development projects and chaired a Border Guarding Conference. These actions followed recent state government cooperation, including the transfer of 120 acres of land for border fencing and the handover of seven highways to the central government. He also held meetings at Uttarkanya regarding new birth and death registration rules designed to curb fraudulent documentation through digital issuance.
The tour concluded on July 19 in Kolkata, where Shah chaired a high-level meeting to review the state's law and order situation. This review included the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, which replaced colonial-era laws in 2024. Additionally, the Home Minister inaugurated the Museum of Word and attended the foundation stone laying ceremony for an Amul Bengal Dairy curd plant.
