Russia and Ukraine Engage in Massive Electronic Warfare Battle

Russia and Ukraine are fighting a high-tech electronic warfare battle using signal jamming and spoofing to neutralize drones and hypersonic missiles.

Russia and Ukraine are engaged in a massive electronic warfare battle, utilizing signal jamming and spoofing to disrupt drones, missiles, and guided bombs. The conflict has triggered a rapid cycle of innovation as both sides attempt to bypass the other's spectrum capabilities.

Ukraine employs the elite Night Watch unit and the Lima system, developed by Cascade, to neutralize threats. These systems have successfully intercepted ballistic missiles targeting Kyiv and a hypersonic Kinzhal missile. To counter Ukrainian jamming, Russia has integrated Chinese-made Controlled Reception Pattern Antennas into its weaponry, prompting Ukraine to develop the Lima Quant update. Additionally, systems from Phantom Defense have detected and neutralized thousands of Russian drones.

The United States Department of Defense is significantly increasing investments in spectrum capabilities to close a development gap that emerged after the Cold War. The U.S. has prioritized electronic warfare procurement and recently deployed the EA-37B Compass Call signal-jamming jet during the Iran war. The U.S. also utilized electronic warfare to disrupt communications during operations to capture Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela.
