OpenAI Acquires Glass Imaging for Over $300 Million

OpenAI acquired Glass Imaging, a California-based AI camera startup, in a deal valued at more than $300 million. The acquisition represents a significant increase from the startup's $100 million valuation in 2025. Glass Imaging specializes in Neural Image Signal Processing and GlassAI technology, which uses neural networks to optimize image quality at the moment of capture, reducing the need for large hardware sensors and post-processing.

OpenAI is integrating this technology into a mystery AI-powered device expected to launch next year. CEO Sam Altman described the upcoming gadget as the "coolest piece of technology that the world will have ever seen," stating it will be unobtrusive and capable of being fully aware of a user's surroundings. Altman claimed the device could increase the company's value by $1 trillion.

This move is part of a broader expansion into consumer hardware. The company is collaborating with designer Jony Ive and previously purchased Ive's device startup, io Products, for $6.5 billion in 2025. Reports suggest OpenAI is exploring a range of hardware, including smartphones, earbuds, and AI companion devices, though the company has not officially confirmed the Glass Imaging transaction.
