SK Hynix Evaluates Memory Chip Production Facilities in Japan

SK Hynix Inc. is evaluating the feasibility of a joint venture to establish memory chip production facilities in Japan. The move aims to satisfy the increasing demand for high-bandwidth and NAND flash memory driven by AI developers including Nvidia Corp., Meta Platforms Inc., and Amazon.com Inc.

Chey Tae-won, Chairman of SK Inc., announced that the company is searching for locations across Japan that possess adequate power and water infrastructure. He advocated for the formation of an economic bloc between South Korea and Japan to address shared challenges such as shrinking workforces.

This potential expansion is part of a larger global capacity increase. The strategy includes a 54 trillion won expansion in South Korea and the construction of a new packaging facility in Indiana, United States. SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh-Jung stated the company is examining ways to co-develop the NAND flash market alongside its customers and suppliers.
