US Treasury Sanctions 17 Iranian Shadow Fleet Vessels
The United States Department of the Treasury sanctioned 17 Iranian tankers to disrupt illicit oil transport while considering case-by-case relief for ships sold to aligned operators.
The United States Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on 17 vessels belonging to Iran's shadow fleet on October 8, 2026. The move aims to disrupt the illicit transport of Iranian petrochemicals and crude oil. Data from Kpler indicates the accompanying naval blockade has already had a significant impact, with no crude oil loaded at Iranian export terminals during September.
Following the sanctions, the U.S. administration reportedly considered a strategy to ease restrictions on a case-by-case basis. This approach would allow sanctioned tankers to change ownership to operators aligned with the United States. The goal is to increase ship availability for shuttle runs through the Strait of Hormuz and lower record-high freight rates, as high war-risk insurance and rental costs currently make aging hulls more economical.
While a blanket lifting of sanctions would represent a retreat, the U.S. has established a precedent for this strategy by previously removing two container ships from the sanctions list after they were sold to aligned operators.
