Nearly 5,000 Germans Emigrate to Poland in 2025

German emigration to Poland reached its highest level since the pandemic as citizens seek lower taxes and better digitalization tools.

Nearly 5,000 Germans emigrated to Poland in 2025, marking the highest total since the coronavirus pandemic. Data from the Statistisches Bundesamt shows that 4,941 people made the move, a figure that outpaced German emigration to Britain, Italy, and the Netherlands, though Switzerland, Austria, and Spain remain more popular destinations.

Emigrants and observers attribute the trend to a business-friendly environment in Poland, citing lower taxes, reduced bureaucracy, and advanced digitalization tools like the mObywatel government app and the BLIK payment system. These factors contrast with current economic conditions and rail network difficulties in Germany.

Some Western Europeans also pointed to Poland's safety and demographic stability relative to France and Belgium. The shift has sparked debate in German media, with the financial daily Handelsblatt highlighting the loss of skilled workers and suggesting Germany could learn from the Polish economy. Meanwhile, Jens Althoff of the Heinrich Böll Foundation noted that many Germans still hold a distorted image of Poland.
