Panda Express CEO Rejects Work-Life Balance Concept
Andrew Cherng attributes the global success of Panda Express to a relentless work ethic and the rejection of traditional work-life balance.
Panda Express co-founder and co-CEO Andrew Cherng has rejected the concept of work-life balance, attributing the growth of the global restaurant chain to a relentless work ethic and demanding schedules. Cherng stated that working 12-hour days was simply a part of life and did not lead to burnout.
Cherng and his wife, Peggy Cherng, built the company without outside investment, expanding from a single family-run restaurant opened in 1973 into a global empire. The chain now operates over 2,600 locations and generates annual revenues nearing $7 billion.
Cherng's perspective aligns with other high-profile leaders who argue that ambitious goals are incompatible with traditional balance. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington have similarly suggested that engaging work prevents a natural ending to the workday.
