Euro Area Unemployment Holds Steady at 6.3 Percent in June

The euro area unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.3 percent in June 2026, according to data from Eurostat. While this figure matches rates from May and June 2025, it was slightly higher than the 6.2 percent predicted by economists. The total number of unemployed individuals in the euro area rose by 71,000 from the previous month to 11.13 million.

Across the broader European Union, the overall unemployment rate held steady at 6.0 percent. EU youth unemployment rose slightly to 15.5 percent in June, up from 15.4 percent in May. However, youth unemployment within the euro area specifically saw a marginal decline to 14.8 percent from 14.9 percent in May.

Regional data revealed divergent trends in Eastern Europe. In Romania, the National Institute of Statistics reported a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 6.3 percent, totaling 511,600 unemployed persons aged 15-74. Despite a slight decrease from May, Romania's youth unemployment remained high at 28.8 percent. In contrast, Bulgaria's unemployment rate was 3 percent in June, an increase from 2.9 percent in May but a decrease from 3.6 percent in June 2025. Bulgaria's youth unemployment also rose, moving from 11.6 percent in May to 12.6 percent in June.
