Citadel Buys AI Fund Situational Awareness After $35 Billion Loss
Citadel acquired the public equity portfolio of Leopold Aschenbrenner's Situational Awareness after the AI-focused fund suffered a 67% loss in July 2026 due to high leverage.
The AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness suffered a dramatic collapse in July 2026, losing approximately $35 billion in a single month. Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher, had grown the fund to a peak of $45 billion in assets under management, delivering returns of 439% in the first half of the year. However, a sharp sell-off in AI infrastructure stocks—including holdings in Micron, CoreWeave, and SK Hynix—combined with failed short positions against software companies like Adobe, triggered massive margin calls from prime brokers including Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase.
To satisfy these obligations, Aschenbrenner executed a forced fire sale of the fund's public equity portfolio to Citadel on July 30, 2026. Citadel, led by Kenneth C. Griffin, acquired the assets at a discount of more than 10% after outbidding Millennium Management. The transaction, described as one of the largest rushed equity deals in Wall Street history, effectively saved the fund from permanent capital impairment.
Despite the public equity meltdown, Situational Awareness remains operational as a private investment firm. It retains approximately $8 billion to $10 billion in assets, most notably a $5 billion stake in the AI developer Anthropic, which saw a 620% valuation increase. Aschenbrenner has since informed investors that the firm will cease using borrowed money for its public book to avoid future liquidation risks. Market analysts noted that the collapse was driven by extreme leverage and concentration in crowded trades rather than a decline in AI fundamentals.
