Kearney Planning Commission Approves Medium-Sized Data Center Project
The Kearney Planning Commission unanimously approved a conditional use permit for a three-phase data center development repurposing a cryptocurrency mining facility.
The Kearney Planning Commission unanimously approved a conditional use permit on August 21 for a medium-sized data center to be developed east of Kearney, Nebraska. The project, led by SDV and Worldwide Mission Critical, will repurpose an existing cryptocurrency mining facility through a three-phase development process.
The facility is designed with a total electrical demand of 368 megawatts. To minimize environmental impact, the developers will utilize closed-loop chilled water systems, estimating primary water consumption at two million gallons annually for landscaping.
As part of a Community Benefit Agreement, the developers intend to partner with Hot Meals USA, Kearney Public Schools, and Central Community College. Project lead Ryan Fuld described the initiative as a "true partnership with the City of Kearney and Buffalo County."
The Planning Commission's recommendation now moves to the Kearney City Council, which is scheduled for a tentative discussion on the project on September 8.
