Massachusetts Distributes Record $58.4 Million in Veteran Annuity Payments

Governor Maura Healey oversees the distribution of $2,500 tax-free annuities to over 23,300 veterans and military families under the HERO Act.

The Government of Massachusetts is distributing $58.4 million in tax-free annuity payments to a record number of veterans and their families. More than 23,300 eligible recipients, including 100% service-connected disabled veterans, Gold Star parents, and surviving spouses of military members killed in the line of duty, are receiving $2,500 each via direct deposit or check.

This increase follows the 2023 enactment of the HERO Act, which raised the annual payment from $2,000 and expanded military benefits. A key component of the expansion allows surviving spouses to retain their annuity payments even if they remarry, removing previous restrictive rules.

Governor Maura Healey and State Senator John Velis highlighted the impact of the legislation on military families and veterans. The Massachusetts Executive Office of Veterans' Services is managing the program and processing the applications to ensure the record number of recipients receive the updated benefit levels.
