Electricity Shortages Delay US AI Data Center Boom

Electricity shortages are delaying US AI data center projects, though research suggests many announced capacities are speculative and unlikely to be realized.

The artificial intelligence data center boom in the United States is facing significant delays and cancellations as electricity shortages strain the power grid. While established companies like Amazon.com are struggling to secure sufficient power for AI equipment, an analysis by Bernstein Research Inc. suggests the scale of the crisis is inflated by speculative projects.

Bernstein Research Inc. concludes that only approximately 35% of announced data center capacity is likely to be realized. The industry describes these dubious announcements as Bragawatts, typically launched by inexperienced companies that lack the necessary permits, customers, or secured power sources.

Further strain is caused by ghost projects, where developers submit multiple electricity requests to test different locations. In Texas, these requests have exceeded the state's existing electricity supply by more than five times, complicating the ability of legitimate projects to move forward.
