Mozilla Updates Firefox Smart Window AI Assistant

Mozilla Corporation updated its Smart Window AI assistant for Firefox, adding real-time web search capabilities through a partnership with Exa Labs.

Mozilla Corporation updated Smart Window, an opt-in AI assistant for the Firefox browser currently in beta. The tool enables users to summarize open tabs, retrace search history using natural language, and verify information without leaving their current page. The assistant also suggests tab groups and provides visual previews of previously visited pages to assist with research flow.

Through a new partnership with Exa Labs Inc., Smart Window can now retrieve current web information and provide source links directly within chat responses. To maintain privacy, Mozilla utilizes zero-data-retention contracts with AI providers. Users can choose between several models, including Google's Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite, OpenAI's oss-gpt-120b, Alibaba's Qwen3-235B-A22B-Instruct-2507, or local models.

The feature is currently available in English for users in the United States and Canada. Ajit Varma, head of Firefox, noted that the browser already possesses significant context regarding user research and tabs, and that Smart Window explores how to make that context useful while keeping the user in control.
