India Locks Down Delhi to Block Anti-CEC Youth Protests

Delhi Police detained thousands and shut down transit hubs to block Cockroach Janta Party protests demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation over voter roll deletions.

The Indian government implemented a massive security lockdown in New Delhi on October 10, 2026, to thwart a youth-led protest organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The demonstrations demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which critics allege illegally removed approximately 130 million voters to benefit the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

Authorities deployed between 30,000 and 40,000 security personnel, suspended mobile internet within a four-kilometer radius of Jantar Mantar, and closed 45 to 57 metro stations. Indian Railways cancelled over 250 trains bound for New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations. The Delhi Police detained approximately 3,000 people, including CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke—who was arrested inside his aircraft upon landing—as well as high-profile political figures such as Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, and Pinarayi Vijayan.

Opposition leaders from the INDIA bloc condemned the crackdown as an "undeclared emergency" and a shift toward dictatorship. In contrast, the government and BJP dismissed the protests as a "flop show" by anarchist elements. The Supreme Court of India intervened, ruling that a total shutdown of public transport was unacceptable and ordering authorities to lift blanket restrictions, stating they should not "use a hammer to kill a fly."

Despite the detentions and the denial of official permits, CJP leadership transitioned to Ajinkya Shinde, who vowed to continue the agitation. The unrest follows a pattern of youth mobilization that previously forced the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in July.
