India Deepens Economic and Security Ties With Canada and UK
The Government of India is expanding strategic partnerships with Canada and the United Kingdom through new security agreements, financial dialogues, and trade negotiations.
The Government of India is aggressively expanding its strategic and economic partnerships with Canada and the United Kingdom. In New Delhi on October 6, 2026, India and Canada agreed to enhance security cooperation to combat terrorism, cybercrime, and transnational organized crime. National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Canadian adviser David Morrison reviewed a security work plan established in February 2026, aiming to streamline information-sharing. This diplomatic reset follows a period of strained relations stemming from 2023 allegations regarding the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Simultaneously, India and Canada are pursuing a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by the end of 2026. Priority areas include energy, critical minerals, and space. A key milestone includes a CAD 2.6 billion long-term uranium supply agreement between Cameco and the Indian Department of Atomic Energy.
In a separate diplomatic track, India and the United Kingdom held the India-UK Financial Markets Dialogue 2026 in London. The two nations agreed to deepen capital market cooperation and increase cross-border investment via GIFT-IFSC. This follows the July 15, 2026, entry into force of the UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). Discussions focused on the internationalization of the Indian rupee, with London serving as the primary offshore trading hub, and the launch of Vision 2035 to coordinate on fintech and sustainable finance.
