Ford Rehires 350 Engineers to Fix AI Quality Failures

Ford Motor Company rehired 350 veteran engineers to oversee quality control after automation failed to identify critical failure points in vehicle production.

The Ford Motor Company rehired 350 veteran engineers to manage quality control after previous automation efforts failed to identify critical failure points. This strategic shift back to human oversight resulted in the company achieving its highest quality ranking among mainstream brands since 2010.

Madhu Shashanka, CTO of Concentric AI, cites the Ford case as evidence that artificial intelligence remains jagged and lacks the human judgment required for tasks without automated tests. Shashanka argues that while AI excels at complex tasks with checkable results, it cannot replace the professional instinct developed in entry-level roles.

Shashanka warns that automating these foundational positions risks eroding the training ground for future expertise. He concludes that human expertise will increase in value as the primary mechanism for identifying AI errors and establishing operational limits to prevent catastrophic mistakes.
