Greece Bans Electric Scooter Use for Minors Under 17

The government of Greece has approved new road safety legislation that prohibits individuals under the age of 17 from riding electric scooters. The law prevents companies from selling, renting, or lending scooters to minors under 17 and establishes fines for businesses that violate these restrictions.

To increase overall road safety, the government is implementing mandatory insurance for all electric scooters and their users. Penalties for traffic violations will increase, specifically for those riding on roads with speed limits exceeding 50 km per hour. A national registry will also be created to identify all scooter owners and users.

These measures respond to government data indicating that riders under 17 suffer significantly higher rates of traffic accidents and serious injuries than other age groups. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is expected to set an implementation date later this summer.
