India Appoints Three New Supreme Court Judges
The Government of India appointed three High Court Chief Justices to the Supreme Court, bringing the court's total strength to 37 judges.
The Government of India appointed three new judges to the Supreme Court on October 5, 2026, following a September 28 recommendation by the Supreme Collegium. The new appointees include Justice Sunita Agarwal, formerly Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court; Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, formerly Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court; and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, formerly Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the elevations, noting that Justice Agarwal's appointment increases gender diversity as the third woman judge on the court. These additions bring the court's working strength to 37 judges, nearly reaching the sanctioned capacity of 38.
The sanctioned limit was recently established by the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Act, 2026. This expansion, approved by the Union Cabinet and Parliament of India, aims to increase judicial efficiency and accelerate the disposal of cases.
