Automakers Deploy Humanoid Robots Amid Labor Union Opposition

Major automakers are integrating humanoid robots into United States factories to automate repetitive tasks such as sorting parts and arranging components. BMW is utilizing robots from Figure AI in South Carolina, while Mercedes-Benz is testing Apptronik robots in Texas. Hyundai Motor, which acquired Boston Dynamics in 2021, is deploying autonomous systems and plans to use humanoids for component arrangement.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has positioned the Optimus robot as a central part of the company's AI strategy, repurposing a California factory for its production. However, this shift faces significant opposition from labor groups. United Auto Workers president Shawn Fain described the technology as a "profound threat" to workers.

The domestic robotics push occurs as the Federal Communications Commission recently banned the import of advanced robots from China. China currently maintains a more dense ecosystem of robotics suppliers and lower deployment costs than the United States.
