Norwegian Media Groups Sue Meta Over AI Data Collection
Ten Norwegian media organizations are seeking a court injunction to block Meta from using professional account content to train artificial intelligence products.
Ten Norwegian media organizations have filed for a provisional injunction in the Oslo district court to block Meta from implementing new user terms. The plaintiffs, including public broadcaster NRK, news agency NTB, and media groups Schibsted, Amedia, Polaris, and Aller, argue the terms allow the technology company to collect articles, photos, and videos—including paywalled content—to develop artificial intelligence products.
The media groups claim the new terms force professional account holders into an all-or-nothing choice between accepting the terms or deleting their accounts. Lene Eltvik Vindfeld of the Norwegian Media Businesses' Association stated that Meta is using media investments to develop AI services that compete directly with the publishers, calling the practice unacceptable and a distortion of competition.
Meta has delayed the implementation of the new terms until November 20. The company stated the delay is intended to provide more time to explain the changes to partners and stakeholders.
