Lion Green Road Housing Project Wins Stirling Prize

The Royal Institute of British Architects awarded the Stirling Prize to the Lion Green Road housing project in Coulsdon for its high-density garden design.

The Royal Institute of British Architects awarded the Stirling Prize, the most prestigious architecture award in the United Kingdom, to the Lion Green Road housing project in Coulsdon, Croydon. Designed by Mary Duggan Architects and Ruff Architects, the development features 157 flats across five pavilion-like towers.

The project was originally commissioned for 80 homes but expanded to 157 units while preserving the site's mature trees and woodland. The housing is split equally between private rentals and affordable housing. The development was managed by Brick by Brick, a former council-owned housebuilding company that collapsed in 2020 following the bankruptcy of Croydon Council.

RIBA judges described the development as a "new kind of garden neighbourhood." Chris Williamson, President of RIBA, praised the project for its ability to achieve high density without compromising the quality of the environment or public access.
