Cornell President Pledges Transparency After Alleged Gang Rape
Cornell University President Michael Kotlikoff pledged greater transparency and legislative support following a lawsuit over the university's handling of a 2024 alleged gang rape.
Michael Kotlikoff, President of Cornell University, pledged greater transparency and administrative improvement following mounting outrage over the university's response to a 2024 alleged gang rape of a student at a fraternity house. In a video message, Kotlikoff described the event as deeply disturbing and stated that the administration and community must do better.
The victim, identified as Jane Doe, filed a lawsuit against the university and seven former students. The case has drawn scrutiny toward a New York law regarding voluntary intoxication, which Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten cited as the reason for his initial decision not to pursue criminal charges. Kotlikoff has since committed the university's support to legislative efforts aimed at closing this legal loophole.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has intervened by calling for an independent investigation and transferring the criminal probe to the state attorney general. Cornell University is expected to announce further details regarding the independent investigation into the matter.
