TSA Deploys 1,200 New 3D X-Ray Scanners Nationwide

The Transportation Security Administration is deploying new 3D computed tomography (CT) X-ray scanners across approximately 300 airports in the United States. To date, the agency has installed nearly 1,200 of these machines nationwide to accelerate security lines by allowing passengers to keep laptops and toiletries inside their bags.

The new scanners feature an opening of 24.5 inches wide by 16.5 inches high, which is roughly half an inch smaller than previous models. While some concerns have emerged that these smaller dimensions could force travelers to check bags or purchase new luggage, the agency notes that the dimensions still exceed the maximum carry-on allowances of all major U.S. airlines.

Bags that are too large for the scanners will be subject to manual inspection or required to be checked by the traveler.
