World Bank Approves $1.1 Billion Emergency Aid for Bangladesh

The World Bank approved $1.1 billion to help Bangladesh combat food insecurity and economic instability caused by rising global fuel and fertilizer prices.

The World Bank approved $1.1 billion in emergency financing for Bangladesh to mitigate economic shocks and food insecurity driven by volatile fuel and fertilizer prices linked to the Middle East conflict. The package is divided into two primary initiatives designed to protect vulnerable populations and maintain critical infrastructure.

A $300 million Emergency Support for Food Security Project will fund the import of 600,000 metric tons of fertilizer, including 500,000 tons of urea. This support targets 1.4 million hectares of farmland during the Aman and Boro rice seasons, which together account for approximately 90% of the nation's annual rice production.

Parallel to this, a $713 million Contingent Emergency Response Project provides quick-disbursing cash transfers and livelihood assistance for small businesses and poor households. This project also ensures the procurement of energy and fuel to maintain essential healthcare, water, and electricity services, with disbursement scheduled by June 30, 2026.

This intervention comes as the government, led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, proposes a record 9.02 trillion taka budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year. Additionally, Bangladesh is seeking further assistance from the International Monetary Fund to stabilize its foreign exchange reserves.
