Prashant Kishor Wins Bankipur Bypoll Ending BJP's 31-Year Hold

Prashant Kishor, founder of the Jan Suraaj party and a former political strategist, won the Bankipur assembly bypoll in Patna, Bihar, on August 3, 2026. Kishor defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha in a seat that had been a BJP stronghold since 1995. The bypoll was triggered after BJP leader Nitin Nabin vacated the seat to move to the Rajya Sabha.

Kishor secured a decisive victory, receiving 64,151 votes and winning by a final margin of 19,324 votes. The result marks a significant political shift for Kishor, who failed to win any seats during the 2025 Bihar Assembly election. This win provides validation for the Jan Suraaj movement, positioning it as a challenger to both the NDA and the Mahagathbandhan.

Kishor deliberately contested the Bankipur seat to encourage voters to move beyond caste and religion and stop voting based on fear of traditional political figures. The outcome represents a major upset for the BJP, which saw its long-term urban stronghold flip to the newly formed party.
