Boeing Forecasts Global Freighter Fleet to Exceed 4,000 by 2045

Boeing projects the global freighter fleet will surpass 4,000 aircraft by 2045, driven by e-commerce and demand for AI hardware.

Boeing projects that the global freighter fleet will exceed 4,000 airplanes by 2045, according to the 2026 World Air Cargo Forecast. Released during the International Air Cargo Association's Air Cargo Forum, the report predicts air cargo traffic will double over the next 20 years with an annual growth rate of 3.5%, outpacing long-term economic growth.

This expansion is driven by rising e-commerce volumes and a high demand for advanced manufacturing goods and time-sensitive AI hardware. Data from the International Air Transport Association indicates that over 70% of AI-related goods were transported by air in 2025. Trade flows involving Asia are expected to dominate the market, representing approximately 60% of global air cargo traffic.

To support this growth and replace retiring aircraft, Boeing estimates operators will need 2,930 new and converted freighters by 2045. The company expects two-thirds of these deliveries to be converted passenger planes. Darren Hulst, Boeing's Vice President of Commercial Marketing, noted that dedicated freighters remain essential as global trade patterns change and demand for high-value goods grows.
