2026 US Midterms Become Most Expensive Elections in History
Campaign spending for the 2026 US midterm elections reached nearly $12 billion, driven by massive Super PAC contributions and high-cost Senate races in Texas and Michigan.
The 2026 US midterm elections have become the most expensive in history, with total spending reaching approximately $11.9 billion. This figure represents a 30% increase over the 2022 midterms and surpasses the costs of the 2024 presidential election. Data from OpenSecrets and AdImpact indicate that a significant portion of these funds targeted U.S. Senate races, particularly in toss-up states like Georgia, Texas, Michigan, and Ohio.
Elon Musk emerged as the top individual donor, contributing nearly $500 million to Republican causes through America PAC and the Senate Leadership Fund. Much of this funding targeted the Texas Senate race between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico, which became the most expensive contest in the country at over $600 million. On the Democratic side, George Soros provided $102 million to liberal groups via Geosor Corp and the Fund for Policy Reform, while Michael Bloomberg contributed over $60 million.
Spending patterns diverged by party, with Republicans investing heavily in immigration-focused advertisements and Democrats prioritizing healthcare. While Republicans outspent Democrats in most key Senate races, Michigan was the sole exception where Democrats held the spending advantage. Concerns have also risen regarding dark money, estimated to exceed $1.5 billion, with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee accused of using shell PACs to influence candidates.
