Big Tech AI Data Center Spending Hits $750 Billion

Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet are spending $750 billion on AI data centers amid warnings from investors that the spending indicates a bubble.

Four major technology firms—Meta Platforms Inc., Amazon.com Inc., Microsoft Corp., and Alphabet Inc.—are expected to spend approximately $750 billion on capital expenditures this year. This spending is primarily driven by the construction of AI data centers, with the United States projecting a tripling of its data center capacity over the next four years.

Construction costs are rising due to the increasing price of copper, chips, and building materials, alongside local opposition and regulatory hurdles. In Abilene, Texas, a single-gigawatt AI data center is estimated to cost roughly $30 billion. These regulatory challenges have already impacted operations, as Oracle issued a force majeure notice regarding a data center project in New Mexico.

Some financial figures warn that this level of investment signals an AI bubble. Investor Michael Burry highlighted the risk of circular deals between hardware providers like Nvidia Corp. and customers such as OpenAI, suggesting that the massive capital expenditures may not be enough to prevent the bubble from bursting.
