China Retail Sales Grow 2.5 Percent Through August 2026
The National Bureau of Statistics reports a 2.5 percent increase in total retail sales, driven by a structural shift toward services and online consumption.
The National Bureau of Statistics reported that China's consumer market expanded in the first eight months of 2026, with total retail sales of goods and services increasing by 2.5 percent year on year. This growth reflects a structural shift toward higher-quality consumption and services, with retail sales of services rising 4.9 percent, significantly outpacing the 1 percent growth seen in goods sales.
Online retail sales reached 13.48 trillion yuan, marking a 4.6 percent increase, while rural retail sales grew by 2.3 percent. Spokesperson Fu Linghui attributed this resilience to pro-consumption policies, noting that the market remained stable despite the pressures of extreme weather and international energy volatility.
The Government of China has set a long-term target to increase total retail sales of consumer goods to approximately 60 trillion yuan by 2030. To achieve this goal, the state plans to advance trade-in programs, stabilize economic expectations, and implement measures to raise consumer incomes.
