YS Jagan Mohan Reddy Regrets Supporting 2023 Election Law
YS Jagan Mohan Reddy stated his party made a mistake supporting the 2023 law governing the appointment of India's Chief Election Commissioner.
Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy stated on Sunday that the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party made a mistake by supporting the 2023 Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office Act. Speaking at a press conference, Reddy argued that the current process allows the ruling party to control appointments, comparing the system to a student appointing their own examiner.
Reddy proposed a new selection committee comprising the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Chief Justice of India, with each member holding equal voting rights. His comments follow allegations of bias by the state poll panel during local body election nominations in Andhra Pradesh. Reddy also accused the ruling Telugu Desam Party of misusing state machinery and engaging in political violence against YSRCP workers.
Leaders from the Telugu Desam Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party criticized the shift in stance. TDP leader N Vijay Kumar claimed the remarks were driven by political convenience following the YSRCP's loss of power, while BJP leader B Vinusha Reddy questioned why the party supported the legislation in Parliament if it now views the process as flawed. The 2023 law, which removed the Chief Justice of India from the selection committee, is currently being challenged in the Supreme Court of India.
