India Outsourcing Sector Grows Despite AI Disruption

India continues to dominate the global outsourcing market, controlling more than half of the sector and earning approximately $205 billion annually from software services exports. According to a report by ING Group, the industry is resisting the disruptive pressures of artificial intelligence by evolving its service offerings. Software services exports now represent 5.2% of India's GDP, while business services, including analytics and finance, account for 3.3%.

The sector is actively transitioning away from repetitive tasks such as customer support and data entry. Instead, it is focusing on higher-value services including software development, engineering design, and risk management. This strategic shift has allowed India's digitally delivered services exports to grow by 45% since 2022, significantly outpacing the global growth rate of 32%.

Deepali Bhargava, head of Asia-Pacific research at ING, argues that fears regarding AI-driven disruption are premature in markets like India and the Philippines. She notes that AI is reshaping the nature of what gets outsourced rather than shrinking the overall demand for these services.
