Singapore Parliament Drops Penalties for Workers' Party Leaders
Leader of the House Indranee Rajah announced that legal time limits prevent Parliament from punishing Sylvia Lim and Faisal Manap for lying under oath.
Leader of the House Indranee Rajah announced in Parliament on July 7, 2026, that no further action will be taken against Workers' Party leaders Sylvia Lim and Faisal Manap. The decision follows findings by the Committee of Privileges that Lim and Manap lied under oath during a 2021 investigation into former MP Raeesah Khan.
While a December 2025 High Court judgment effectively confirmed these findings, Rajah stated that the Parliament (Privileges, Immunities and Powers) Act contains time bar provisions. Specifically, Section 22 prevents the current 15th Parliament from imposing penalties for conduct that occurred during the first session of the 14th Parliament.
Action against Lim and Manap had been deferred to allow for the conclusion of legal proceedings against Workers' Party chief Pritam Singh. Singh was convicted of lying to the committee, fined $14,000 in February 2025, and removed as Leader of the Opposition in January 2026. Rajah noted that the House had already expressed its disapproval of the conduct through the motion against Singh. Sylvia Lim reportedly expressed no objection to bringing the matter to a close.
