Scott Bessent Pursues Iran Blockade Amid Energy Expansion

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is attempting to build a financial blockade against Iran while the U.S. expands energy investments in Venezuela.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is attempting to establish a global financial blockade against Iran to secure a peace deal. Bessent has adopted a diplomatic stance of "with us or against us" to pressure other nations to join the effort. However, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, led by China and Russia, is countering these U.S. efforts by discussing increased trade and investment with Tehran.

While pursuing sanctions in the Middle East, the United States government is expanding energy interests in Venezuela. The U.S. unveiled a joint venture to develop 17 oil fields, supported by private sector investment. Chevron Corp. announced a more than $7 billion investment in the Orinoco Belt, and the Italian company Eni SpA plans to increase its output in the region.

Simultaneously, diplomatic relations between the United States and Canada have deteriorated. Tensions have risen following the imposition of U.S. tariffs and the renaming of Lake Ontario to "Lake America." In response, Canada has initiated boycotts of U.S. liquor and wine.
