Pentagon Designates Palantir Maven AI as Official Program of Record

The United States Department of Defense has designated Palantir Technologies Inc.'s Maven Smart System as an official program of record, transitioning the AI battlefield intelligence platform from pilot programs to a standardized military capability. In a March 9 letter, Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg stated the move is necessary to help warfighters detect, deter, and dominate adversaries across all domains. Full integration across all military branches is expected by September 2026, with the U.S. Army managing future contracting and oversight shifting to the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office.

Maven analyzes real-time data from satellites, drones, and sensors to identify and prioritize targets. The system has already facilitated thousands of strikes against Iran, with reports indicating over 11,000 strikes since February 28. However, the use of AI in targeting has drawn criticism from U.S. Congress members like Sara Jacobs, who cited a strike on a school in Minab, Iran, that killed 168 people as evidence of the need for strict human-in-the-loop guardrails.

Palantir executives have defended the platform, asserting that military customers remain responsible for the final lethal decisions. The adoption follows a period of volatility for Palantir's partners; the Pentagon recently blacklisted Anthropic from federal contracts due to supply chain risks and disputes over autonomous weapons, despite Maven's partial reliance on Anthropic's Claude AI. Financially, the designation reinforces Palantir's position with the government, supporting a separate enterprise agreement with the U.S. Army valued up to $10 billion over ten years.
