Lindt & Sprüngli Gifts Luxury Chocolate Suitcases to Shareholders

Lindt & Sprüngli provides exclusive chocolate suitcases to shareholders attending its annual meeting, a tradition that has become a status symbol for wealthy Swiss investors.

Lindt & Sprüngli provides a Schokoladekoffer, or chocolate suitcase, containing approximately 10 pounds of assorted chocolates to shareholders who attend the company's annual meeting in Zurich every April. A company spokesperson described the gift as a "thank you for their efforts."

While the chocolate is free, the voting shares required to receive the gift are highly exclusive. These shares cost around 78,000 Swiss francs, exceeding $94,000, and reached a peak of 132,000 Swiss francs within the last year. The tradition has evolved into a status symbol among wealthy Swiss investors to signal ownership of the valuable registered shares.

Thierry Borgeat, cofounder and chief investor of Swiss asset manager arvy, noted that the practice is a "Swiss kind of flex," arguing that investors do not spend 100,000 Swiss francs simply for free chocolate. Despite the prestige associated with the shares, Lindt stock has recently slumped following record temperatures and high cocoa prices that reduced sales.
