New Zealand Treasury Forecasts Reduced Budget Deficit
The New Zealand Treasury forecasts a significantly lower budget deficit for 2027 and an accelerated return to surplus by 2028-29.
The New Zealand Treasury has forecast a reduced budget deficit and lower debt than previously projected in its May budget. In a pre-election update, the agency projected an operating balance before gains and losses (OBEGAL) deficit of NZ$8.73 billion for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2027. This represents a significant decrease from the NZ$14.09 billion deficit predicted in May.
The government now expects to return to an OBEGAL surplus by 2028-29, moving the timeline forward from the previous 2029-2030 estimate. Treasury Secretary Iain Rennie attributed the shift from a V-shaped to a U-shaped recovery to conflicts in the Middle East, which he stated delayed but did not derail the economic recovery.
Despite the improved short-term outlook, Rennie warned that the country's long-term financial position remains "unsustainable" due to an ageing population. These updates come as the government prepares for a general election in November.
