Ford CEO Pivots EV Strategy to Benchmark Chinese Rivals

Jim Farley announces Ford is shifting its EV benchmark from Tesla to Chinese automakers like BYD to prioritize affordability and manufacturing efficiency.

Ford CEO Jim Farley announced that Ford Motor Company is no longer using Tesla as its primary electric vehicle benchmark, asserting that Tesla lacks an updated vehicle lineup. Farley instead identified Chinese automakers, specifically BYD and Xiaomi, as the new global standards for innovation, cost structure, and supply chain management. He revealed that he spent six months driving a Xiaomi SU7 to gauge the competition and described BYD as the best in the business.

This strategic shift follows a 19.5 billion dollar charge Ford took in December to revamp its EV strategy after demand weakened following the end of U.S. EV tax credits. Farley admitted that earlier models, such as the F-150 Lightning, were designed the wrong way and lost money. Consequently, Ford is pivoting away from all-electric versions of large trucks to prioritize smaller, budget-friendly hybrid and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs).

Ford's new goal is to target a 30,000 dollar price point for pickups and utility vehicles by 2027 using a new Universal EV platform. Farley warned that the eventual entry of Chinese vehicles into the U.S. market would be devastating to domestic manufacturing if American companies do not innovate. While 100% tariffs currently bar Chinese EVs from the U.S., they continue to expand across Europe and Latin America.
