Amazon Proposes 150,000-Square-Foot Delivery Station in Gorham

Amazon Inc. proposes constructing a 150,000-square-foot last-mile delivery station on 94 acres of town-owned land in Gorham, Maine. The company intends to purchase the parcel for approximately $4 million to develop a facility featuring nearly 1,000 parking spots and handling up to 3,000 daily trips. The project is expected to create between 150 and 170 jobs with starting pay of $23 per hour, and the company stated it does not require tax incentives for the development.

The Gorham Planning Board is currently reviewing the proposal, during which local residents have raised objections concerning noise, carbon emissions, plastic waste, and traffic safety for children. In response to this feedback, Amazon adjusted its operational plans to ensure truck traffic occurs primarily in two waves—from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.—rather than around the clock.

Additional mitigation measures proposed by the company include the installation of a sound wall, dimmed parking lot lighting, and the creation of a buffer area. Amazon representatives also noted that some minimal wetlands disturbance is being reviewed by the Department of Environmental Protection and the Army Corps of Engineers, while a large portion of the rear of the site will remain untouched.
