BMW Begins Production of 2027 i3 Electric Sedan

BMW began series production of the 2027 i3 sedan on August 6, 2026, at its plant in Munich. The i3 is a bespoke electric vehicle built on the Neue Klasse platform, marking a departure from previous combustion-engine models. The initial launch features the i3 50 xDrive, with the i3 40 and i3 M60 variants expected to follow, and a high-performance M3 electric version planned for 2027.

To manage high demand, the company opened pre-sales for a First Edition in mid-June across Europe, with standard models available for order in late September. Deliveries in Europe will begin this fall, while shipments to the United States are scheduled for later in 2027.

Production will expand to the San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico starting in 2027. As part of a strategic shift, the Munich facility is transitioning to exclusive EV production by 2027, while the production of combustion-engine 3 Series vehicles is moving to Dingolfing.
