Microsoft Plans Xbox Handheld and Project Helix Console
Microsoft will launch a next-generation Xbox handheld in 2027 and a new console family, Project Helix, in 2028.
Microsoft plans to expand its gaming hardware portfolio with the launch of a next-generation Xbox handheld device during the 2027 holiday season. This will be followed by the release of a next-generation console, codenamed Project Helix, in the holidays of 2028.
Project Helix is described as a family of devices developed through a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD. Unless the company subsidizes the hardware, the devices may cost between $1,200 and $1,800. Internally, the Xbox team has secured control over the software direction for Helix after clashes with the Windows team.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is managing organizational changes alongside these hardware plans, including further rounds of layoffs scheduled through January. Sharma is also exploring a more flexible Xbox Game Pass structure that could include ad-supported tiers and specific add-ons for multiplayer and cloud gaming.
