70,000 SASSA Beneficiaries Miss Postbank Black Card Deadline

Approximately 70,000 beneficiaries of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) failed to collect their new Postbank black cards by the August 31, 2026, deadline. This date marked the official end of the migration from SASSA gold cards, which are no longer operational. While funds will still be deposited into accounts during the September 2 to 7 payment cycle, beneficiaries without the new cards will be unable to access their money.

To prevent payment interruptions, SASSA and Postbank are keeping collection sites open after the deadline. Beneficiaries can collect the new cards free of charge by presenting a valid South African ID at participating retailers, including ShopRite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer, and Spar. Users can also dial *120*355# to find the nearest issuance site via SMS.

Minister of Social Development Dina Pule assured beneficiaries that the transition would not affect the timing of grant payments. Postbank Chief Commercial Officer Thami Cele urged those who missed the cutoff to act immediately to restore access to their funds, noting that the cards work instantly upon collection without further registration.
