Spain, Portugal, and Luxembourg Urge EU 2040 Energy Target
Spain, Portugal, and Luxembourg called on the European Union to set a 2040 renewable-energy target to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.
The governments of Spain, Portugal, and Luxembourg have urged the European Union to establish a formal renewable-energy target for 2040. In a joint letter to EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen, the energy ministers of the three nations called for the bloc to accelerate the rollout and integration of renewable energy sources.
The ministers argued that the transition is necessary to secure energy independence and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels. They specifically cited geopolitical uncertainties and the consequences of the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz as evidence of the risks associated with current energy dependencies.
The proposal emphasizes the need for the European Union to act quickly to mitigate these vulnerabilities by integrating renewable energy across the member states.
