Gartner Warns of $3.5 Trillion AI Infrastructure Impairment Risk
Gartner Inc. forecasts that $3.5 trillion in AI infrastructure spending could face impairment by 2030 due to insufficient revenue generation.
Gartner Inc. warns that more than $3.5 trillion in AI infrastructure spending could face impairment by 2030. The market research firm's analysis indicates that the current investment boom is outpacing the revenue necessary to justify the costs.
To cover capital spending, financing costs, and a 12% return on invested capital, AI data center owners would need to generate $8.5 trillion in cumulative revenue through 2030. However, the firm forecasts that attributable enterprise and consumer AI revenue will reach no more than $3.6 trillion during that period.
This projected revenue is less than half of the amount required to sustain the current level of investment, creating a significant risk of write-downs for infrastructure owners.
