Saudi Red Sea Gateway Terminal Considers Cape Town Port Bid

The Saudi Arabian ports operator Red Sea Gateway Terminal is considering a bid for a 25-year concession to refurbish and operate a terminal at the Port of Cape Town. The Transnet National Ports Authority is seeking a private operator for the Duncan Dock Precinct to modernize infrastructure and expand capacity for break-bulk, dry-bulk, and containerized cargo.

This initiative is part of a larger effort by the government-owned Transnet SOC Ltd. to resolve freight and logistics bottlenecks. The move follows a report by the World Bank and S&P Global that ranked the facility as the worst performing port in the world last year.

South African officials view the project as critical for reviving a national economy that has suffered from low growth and transport constraints for more than a decade. Bids for the terminal operation are due by November 20.
